The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), California’s governmental ethics and campaign disclosure agency, is pleased to welcome Dr. José A. Gómez as its newest Commissioner.

Dr. Gómez is the executive vice president and provost at California State University, Los Angeles. In his current role at Cal State LA, he has been instrumental in efforts to enhance student success, secure funding at the university, craft innovative partnerships with government and industry, and deepen engagement with the city of Los Angeles.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Gómez to the Commission,” said FPPC Chair Richard C. Miadich. “His extensive background in government, academia, and civic activity will bring a well-rounded, unique, and vital perspective to our Commission.”

Dr. Gómez is being appointed to the Commission by Attorney General Rob Bonta. The Attorney General is one of the three Constitutional Officers (Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Controller) besides the Governor with appointment powers to the Commission. He replaces former Commissioner Frank Cardenas, who resigned this year after serving four and a half years in the role.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. Gómez for his willingness to serve the people of California as the newest Commissioner to the FPPC,” said Attorney General Rob Bonta. “He will bring a rich depth of knowledge to the Commission’s critical work of promoting transparency and integrity in our state’s political processes.”

Prior to joining Cal State LA in 2009, Gómez held senior positions in the California Legislature, Department of Justice, and State Treasurer’s Office, including serving as the chief higher education advisor to the president of the California State Senate and executive director of the California Educational Facilities Authority (CEFA), the state’s higher education facilities financing and student loan agency.

Gómez holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) and master’s degrees in political science and public administration, as well as a Ph.D. in political science, from the University of Southern California (USC). Gómez chairs the Cal State LA BioSpace life sciences incubator and the university’s Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs. He also serves on the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) Board of Governors and Executive Committee, the Board of Directors of the Western Justice Center Foundation, and the Board of Directors of the YMC of Metropolitan Los Angeles.
